IL provides research design, assessment, and evaluation services that strengthen peacebuilding, humanitarian, and development programming for children and youth living in a variety of conflict-affected and fragile contexts.

Each project is tailored to the needs of local partners and implemented in stages—from context analysis, conflict mapping and design, to evaluation and iterative improvement.

 

We specialize in direct research and program support using media and communication research methodologies and technology-enabled AI and other tools to enhance impact of child- and youth-centered peacebuilding initiatives.

• ​Notably, we treat technology—including AI—as a responsible research tool rather than a trend, integrating it with quantitative methods and our pioneering participatory and ethnographic methodologies and methods.

 

Research Areas and Services:

 

• Conflict Mapping — Identifying macro- and micro-level conflict causes and triggers to inform policy, design, and operational decision-making.

• Context Analysis — Interpreting local cultural and conflict contexts; working backward via culturally grounded communication and peacebuilding strategies to encode relevant practices and phenomena into program design.
• Asset Mapping — Assessing existing community and organizational resources that can be leveraged for program design, resilience, and sustainability.
• Needs Assessment — Identifying and prioritizing community and population needs that require targeted interventions.
• Program Development — Designing targeted theory of change-, evidence-driven, context-sensitive communication, education, media, technology, peacebuilding, protection, and/or empowerment initiatives.
• Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) — Measuring program effectiveness, strengthening feedback systems, and informing future implementation.
• Child-and Youth-Centered Research Design — Using participatory media, communication, and technology tools to understand children’s media practices, interpretive processes, intergroup attitudes, experiences and opinions, and designing and evaluating youth-led peacebuilding initiatives.

IL’s direct research services are adaptable to a wide range of peacebuilding priorities in conflict-affected, divided, and post-conflict societies, such as:

 

• Building grassroots support for peacemaking and just and sustainable peace

• Aiding conflict zone children’s psychosocial adaptation through storytelling, education, and media-based tools.

• Stemming violence against girls, and protecting and empowering them.

• Improving outcomes of refugee and migrant youth experiencing "waithood" and forced displacement.

• Proactively mapping out accommodations for disabled conflict zone children

• Slowing biological aging and adverse health outcomes among refugee children facing chronic stress.

• Harnessing youth potential and empowering them as peacebuilders.
